It's not as though Mike Peters, Scott Rains, Joe Roseman, Matt Weggen and Josh Cantrill had never accomplished anything in the sport of bowling before.
In fact, based on their track records, the five players who comprised the Trophy King team in the Iowa state bowling tournament look like a veritable Quad-Cities dream team. However, winning the open team championship of the 94th annual state event, which concluded Sunday, still will rank pretty high on all their lists of achievements.
"State titles are kind of few and far between," Roseman said. "It doesn't pay all that great, but the idea of winning a title is the big thing. All these guys are my friends. To be able to do it with them and break the record with them is pretty special."
The state tournament was held over 14 weekends at Leisure Lanes and 30 Lanes in Davenport. Trophy King rolled its five-man series of 3,678 at Leisure Lanes fairly early in the tournament, on March 5-6, then sat back and watched to see if anyone could top it.
Another Davenport team - Dentist's Dental Service - came close with a 3,623, but the 3,678 score held up.
Charles Kutsch, manager of the Iowa State Bowling Association, said it will be a week or two before the results are official, but it appears Trophy King demolished the previous state record of 3,609, set by Tank's Tunes of Cedar Rapids in 2007.
Roseman, a Davenport native who is a detective for the Muscatine police department, led the way with a 780 series. Cantrill, a Rock Island native who works for Barrows-Hess Wood Floors, rolled a 740. Rains, a Federal Express driver from Colona, Ill., added a 734. Peters, a UPS driver from Coal Valley, Ill., had a 727. And Weggen, a computer technician for Bandag in Muscatine, logged a 697.
